American Politics as American Idol?

I think celebrity has played a large role in this election. McCain's time as a POW, Palin's good looks and "hockey mom" appeal and Obama's youth and race have all turned politicians in this election into public figures outside of the realm of politics. However, I disagree with the assessment that their characters will be the decisive factor in this election. The victor in this election will win over the public with his policies, not his celebrity, although both will be factors on election day.

I completely agree that character will be the decisive factor in this election. The fact is that neither candidate has the perfect plans and will not be able to pass all their proposals. Most people won't realize it, but they are actually voting for the person they believe and trust more, not the person who will do more. Basically, no one has any idea what Obama or McCain will actually do if elected. The voters are going on nothing but faith on the candidate of their choice.

I agree with David. Although Obama was attacked sometimes for being too much of a "celebrity" I think that it really helped Obama's campaign. Plus, there's nothing wrong with having a celebrity-like president that the people love and admire (See: John F. Kennedy).
I also agree with Jerry in that, maybe people realize how important one's character is. Everyone knows that most of what come out of campaigning presidential candidates' mouths is, for a lack of a better word, bull****. So, it would be impossible to pick a president based on what they say, because most of it just isn't true on both sides. More importantly, voters must decide from what they see of the candidates if they think that the candidate's character is best fit for the White House. In this sense, Obama did a great job this election portraying his character in a crowd-winning way.
